So you’re having surgery and they told you they won’t let you leave without a responsible adult… and now you’re thinking, “Okay… but who am I going to ask?!?!” (and that’s when the anxiety kicks in, because suddenly this procedure has become a logistical nightmare).
Maybe you don’t have family nearby. Maybe your friends are working. Maybe you’re new to the city and don’t really know anyone yet. Or maybe you simply hate asking people for favours. I get it.
You’re not the only one who feels stuck in this situation. Hospitals and clinics in Vancouver require someone to be present before they’ll discharge you, especially if anesthesia or sedation is involved (which is a GOOD thing, let’s be real). But when you don’t have a built-in support person, the whole thing can feel overwhelming, awkward, or just plain stressful. That’s where I come in – calm, supportive, and judgment-free. Let me know the date of your procedure and location here and I’ll get back to you asap.
I can also support you from start to finish… here’s how the process works:
- I meet you at your home so you’re not getting yourself out the door feeling rushed, nervous, or alone.
- We take a taxi or Uber together – easy, door-to-door, zero hassle. No “parking lot full” signs, no driving in circles and running out of time, no paying for all-day parking, and no chance of getting separated.
- I stay right beside you until you’re checked in and can carry your bag, jacket, paperwork – all the little things you don’t want to hold onto or stash somewhere in the hospital. And honestly? Going to surgery by yourself can feel a bit daunting. Most people don’t realize how comforting it is to have someone with them, who wants to be there, until they’re actually in it.
- I leave my name and phone number with the nurse’s station so staff know exactly who’s responsible for you and who to call when you’re ready for discharge.
- I’m right there when you’re cleared to go, since hospitals require someone physically present before they release you.
- I help you get safely into the taxi or Uber, especially when you’re groggy or unsteady from sedation, and carry your things for you. No rushing or feeling like you need to “perform” being okay.
- I help you settle in with water, pillows, blankets, meds within reach, lights adjusted – whatever helps you feel grounded and comfortable.
- If you need a little extra support afterward, I can stay to warm up a meal, tidy a few things, pick up a prescription, or handle small tasks while you rest.
- They may even tell you that you’ll need someone overnight, depending on your surgery. If that happens, I can be the support person who stays with you, keeps water and ice packs handled, and makes sure you’re taken care of through the night.
- I’m also available for continued support in the days or weeks after surgery, including follow-up appointments, check-ins, and practical help as you get back on your feet. (People usually think they’ll be just fine on their own after surgery… until it becomes clear how unexpectedly challenging those seemingly small daily tasks really are).
And maybe you don’t feel like you need all the extras – maybe you truly just need someone to accompany you so the hospital can discharge you and make sure you get home safely. That’s completely fine. Like I said, send me a message here and we can go from there.
